Ground transportation of a pediatric patient on ECMO support.

چکیده
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is a technique for providing cardiac and/or pulmonary support. Many hospitals worldwide practice ECMO at some time, yet few centers are able to offer a portable ECMO service, with the United Kingdom being of no exception. We describe the first reported successful ground transfer of a 22-kg girl with suspected myocarditis, supported by veno-arterial ECMO between two hospitals within the United Kingdom (U.K.). A modified Falcon series 2 patient stretcher was used to transport the patient and house the ECMO hardware, consisting of a Levitronix Centri-Mag pump system, a Hico-variotherm 550 heater/cooler unit, and an oxygen supply. Design limitations and future technical recommendations of the portable ECMO system subsequent to clinical experience are discussed.

متن کاملTransportation of patients on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation: a tertiary medical center experience and systematic review of the literature
BACKGROUND Utilization of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has increased worldwide, but its use remains restricted to severely ill patients, and few referral centers are properly structured to offer this support. Inter-hospital transfer of patients on ECMO support can be life-threatening. In this study, we report a single-center experience and a systematic review of the available publ...
متن کاملExtracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation for Severe Pediatric Respiratory Failure.
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was developed initially in the 1960s to support refractory respiratory failure in addition to the cardiac support inherent in a venoarterial bypass circuit. Early successes occurred predominantly in the neonatal population with subsequent randomized controlled trials and comprehensive reviews concluding therapeutic efficacy for ECMO in neonatal respira...
متن کاملThe Evaluation of Nosocomial Infections in Pediatric Patients with Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Support
INTRODUCTION Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become a standard technique over the past few decades in intensive care unit (ICU). OBJECTIVE A review of pediatric patients who received ECMO support in the pediatric cardiac ICU was conducted to determine the incidence, risk factors and causal organisms related to acquired infections and assess the survival rates of ECMO patients w...
متن کاملEcmo in a diabetic patient with cerebellar infarction and ARDS- A case report
Background: Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been considered as a crucial modality for the management of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Since ECMO is considered to be an invasive modality and may be associated with some complications, there are strict indications for its use. Here we report successful treatment of a case of severe ARDS with Veno-Venous ECMO. Case pre...
